1.  The JoinHands Mennonite Church Building Program, formerly Tenth Man, is Mennonite Men’s major project of giving financial assistance to new churches seeking to build or purchase their first, permanent meeting house.

 

2.  History - Started in 1985, JoinHands, formerly Tenth Man Church Building program, has provided grants of nearly $1.4 million to 48 congregations in Canada, the United States and overseas.

 

3.  How JoinHands works:

· Individuals, men & women, or groups contribute $100 or more twice a year to provide grants.        

· Reminder/Fund letters are sent out to participants twice a year providing information on the church/s receiving grants.

· Grants of up to 20% of the cost of the church building, but not to exceed $50,000 are provided to qualifying churches.  In order to help more churches grants have temporarily been reduced to $35,000.

 

4.  The need.

· Grants have been committed through 2012 for 12 congregations totaling $349,000.

· 4 additional grant applications are being processed.

· Several applications are in the process of being completed.

 

      5.  Who applies?

· Priority is given to congregations that are less than 10 years old.

· New congregations, most often urban, including numerous racial/ethnic congregations.

 

6.  Overseas grants

Since 1999 a tithe of all grants has been given to help build churches overseas.

 

       7.  Mennonite Men, sponsor of the JoinHands Mennonite Church Building Program, is a                 jointly owned partnership of Mennonite Church Canada and Mennonite Church USA.

 

       8.  An MDS/Mennonite Men partnership has been formed to provide volunteer help to                     congregations receiving grants in renovations or construction of their building.

 

Congregations approved for grants include:

 

· Ivorian Anabaptist Church, Ivory Coast - $5,000 (MMN)

· Salem Mennonite, Chhattisgarh, India - $5,000 (MMN)

· Jubilee Mennonite Church, Bellefontaine, OH - $35,000 (OH)

· Rochester Area Mennonite, Rochester, NY - $35,000 (NY)

· Salina Mennonite Church, Salina, KS - $24,000 (WDC)

· Luz del Evangelio, Dallas, TX $35,000 (WDC/SC)

· Living Water Community, Chicago, IL $35,000 (IL)

· Iglesia Menonita Encuentro de Renovacion, Miami, FL - $35,000 (SE)

· Ethiopian Evangelical, Lancaster, PA - $35,000 (L)

· Church of The Overcomer, Trainer, PA - $35,000 (L)

· Tinsae Kristos, Lancaster, PA - $35,000 (L)

· Albuquerque Mennonite, Albuquerque, NM - $35,000 (MS)
